The source code has always been available to whomever wanted to pay.

As others pointed out - the name change came when VMS was POSIX 
certified (if I remember right, VMS was even the first OS to be POSIX 
certified, which is somewhat ironic, since POSIX is more or less a Unix 
spec.)
