There's a parallel here in Switzerland, where the income taxes vary from
one town or rural area to the next. The major property websites state
what tax index the area has and include a tax calculator. This isn't
just property tax, but your income tax, so it's important.

Just down the road from me is a small town which is a high tax area.
There aren't many businesses there and nobody who can afford to live
elsewhere wants to pay those taxes. The result is a downward spiral into
the red. A couple of years ago they were considering a merger with my
town (the headquarters of a couple of multinationals, so substantially
better off), but it got voted down.

Which raises another point. The resident voters of both towns got a
chance to vote on the merger. Having experienced the way areas are
reorganised in the UK where the residents got next to no say in the
matter, I found this rather refreshing.

You might think that everyone in my town would have voted no, but it was
a very close run thing.
