Back in about 1990 a neighbour of mine had a grit spreading machine for 
the back of a truck, which he'd picked up cheap at auction.  He got fed 
up of seeing it doing nothing so chopped it up for scrap.  Just a couple 
of months later the UK had heavy snowfalls and local authorities were 
desperate for the things.  He was kicking himself for scrapping it, for 
they were fetching good prices.
