Despite some of the efforts in this OpenVMS newsgroup to downplay OpenVMS's contributions, for Customers who have important applications where scale UP and out performance, as well as stability and security are critical, OpenVMS is very much in play.
As an example, the Shanghai Stock Exchange recently (early last year) migrated from UNIX to OpenVMS as part of their next generation trading platform. And for those who are not familiar with Shanghai, some expect it to replace New York in a few years as the center of the global financial community.
Also, some very mission critical manufacturing (e.g. SCADA) Customers who are concerned with the virus of the day have migrated from Windows to OpenVMS Integrity.
OpenVMS on Integrity manages the SMS voting on "American Idol" .. something like 100M votes during the final episode last season.
