Many years ago there was a story in Popular Science about a
video recorder that used quarter inch tape running at about
120 inches per second. To reduce wear on the head, they put
a heater on the head, which apparently smooths the passage
of the tape over the head. I wonder if that would work for
this case. (Though there might not be a good place to
put the heater.)
