I just checked on another forum running a common forum package, and
there is a config switch in the user profile to switch mapping
of ":-)" and so on on/off. I tried to switch it "off" and now
all ":-)" and so on are displayed as plain text.

This confirmes that the mapping to img-tags are done dynamicaly
at display-time by the server.

I do not have a user to the new GCC forum, but do check yourself in
your user config settings, if there isn't a similar setting there.
