As long as it meets their needs.

Where in the world did you get that idea?  That might apply to folks on
VAX, who mostly don't want a new version of VMS etc since what they do
is very VAX-dependent (otherwise they wouldn't be on VAX anymore), but
definitely, by no stretch of the imagination, does it apply to all Rdb
customers.  There are Rdb customers constantly
changing/expanding/upgrading their applications.  The time might come 
when Rdb doesn't support something that they need.  VMS = mature/stable 
applications?  Sounds like marketing spin by the competition.

Actually, it will probably be the accountants who suggest the commodity 
route.
