No, there weren't competitive laptop PPC chips because neither IBM nor
Motorola saw sufficient volume for it. Apple saw the future of laptops
and needed competitive CPUs whereas the PPC usable in laptops were a few
generations behind.

And when you consider that today laptops outsell conventional computers,
Jobs probably made the right move.

The irony is that Apple later bought a chip design company and now
designs its own ARM-based chips for its iToys. In hindsight, that
company could have also designed Power based chips for laptops.
