More information, I hope it's useful:

If I attempt to Telnet to a SMTP server (port 25) on the new system
the connection fails but on the old system a connection is successful.

$ telnet gmail-smtp-in.l.google.COM 25

Pinging the SMTP servers on either systems succeeds with an
appropriate response.
