New Information:

When I attempt to Telnet to a SMTP server (port 25) from the older
system I make a 'good' connection and can proceed with a message.
However, when I try this on the new system the connection fails:

***********Older system

$ telnet mx3.hotmail.COM 25

bulk e-mail to Microsoft's computer network is prohibited. Other
 restrictions are found at http://privacy.microsoft.com/en-us/anti-spam.mspx.

Pinging the SMTP servers (using host names) works on either system.

I hope this added info is helpful.

I appreciate your helping me with this.
