I still don't understand. An image BACKUP save set is not
a disk image. One can create a disk image from any (real or
pseudo) disk. What special structure is there in a layered
products kit which requires an image BACKUP of anything? How
would having an image BACKUP of a layered products kit be
more helpful than having a simple Zip ("-V") archive
containing the same stuff, whether or not one wants to make a
disc image of the stuff?

As I said, I understand that a VMS installation disc is
special, so a disc image of one of those can have value, and
Zip and UnZip can't do everything that BACKUP /IMAGE can do
with the special structure of a VMS system disk. However, I
(still) see no reason to (double-) package a (non-bootable)
layered products kit this way. But feel free to (try to)
enlighten me.

A recent HP Forum discussion suggests that this may not be
the only mystery/defect in the recent Hobbyist kit packaging.
