Try PostgreSQL instead?

Seriously. Back before MySQL even supported transactions I grabbed the
sources for PostgresSQL. It compiled clean on OS X and passed the self-
tests.

And as a bonus, the documentation was more suited than the MySQL
equivalent for folks with a VMS background.

You might wish to go with your homespun MySQL, but Apple have now moved on
to PostgreSQL as of Lion, and with the advent of Mountain Lion, for those
users who expect support from Apple, can probably forget about Apple
security updates for MySQL from that point on.

security updates when Mountain Lion (10.8) is released. Anything beyond
that will be a bonus."

We don't know, but get used to forgetting Apple support, and maintaining
MySQL yourself if you are not intending to go the Mountain Lion route.

Yes, it sucks, but you need to protect your future.

Oh, did I mention that MySQL is now owned by Oracle? That in itself is
enough reason to make me nervous about deploying it in a commercial
environment.
