Guns are designed to kill. It is their only design purpose.

Once you have crime, easy availability of guns converts simple "grab and
run" threft of some purse into "kill and run".

So wide availability of guns amplifies the severity of the crimes from
simple theft to murder (for example). Or a simple slap in the face of
your wife to killing your wife in a sudden rage of uncontrolled anger.

All those TV cop/crime shows also promote the ease of use of guns by
criminals.
