In my case, I like to have multiple windows on screen at the same time, so
I use 80 character width windows, but use a depth of 49 to 51 (depending on
screen resolution) line windows.
I find that suits my working style better.

Or even have left/right cursor keys which do not stop when you hit the
end of the current line of the command... :-)
