When you install VMS on Alpha/Itanium, you should make sure that you
install the optional workstation fonts, including the optional 100 DPI
fonts. These are not absolutely needed, but if you are not using a VMS
system with a graphics adapter for the display, it is not likely to have
all of these fonts.

Then you need to install the DECWindows-Motif layered product, and
optionally local variant if that is available to hobbyists.
There is a separate license key for it.

On a headless system, about the only thing to configure is the font
server. This is detailed in the DECWindows-Motif online documentation
at www.hp.com/go/openvms in the documentation link.

The VAX font server can only be used with the old Digital VXT
X-Terminals, nothing current can use it.

SSH is not available for VAX if you use the HP TCP/IP product.

Having X-11 open to the Internet with out SSH or other VPN, makes it
easy for the bad guys to take over a system, even a VMS system. There
is no security in the protocol.

There is typically so much probes and other noise on a broadband
connection, it is preferable to have a firewall appliance handle that
instead of subjecting a general purpose operating system to handle that
load.
