That is precisely what I was doing for years with Windows, particularly 
with a corporate box I wasn't allowed to install a decent editor on.  I 
too would say "sod this" and whiz something across to VMS to get 
something done.

However the other week when I was poking around some of the VMS Freeware 
stuff I basically did what you did and lobbed it onto a Linux system.

Another point here is that the original limit of directory nesting on VMS 
forced a different structure on source trees.  Traditionally on VMS we 
would have a full program suite (e.g. payroll) in one directory rather 
than using a directory tree per program.  This made recompiling the lot 
in one go very simple, but it wasn't as flexible as a system which has 
the version number built into the top of the directory tree.

And yes, with my VMS background it did take me some time to get my head 
around this.
