It must have been something else I came across in the late 80s.

FWIW the Amstrad PCW 9512 I bought in 1987 had CP/M under the skin.  
Although the hardware quality left much to be desired, the GUI was pretty 
good.  It managed to hide the CP/M stuff very well.  The LocoScript word 
processing package was good and there were other useful packages 
available.  My first ever shareware purchase was a C compiler and Kermit 
for that system.

The C compiler came with vi, the combination of which put me off both for 
a while :-)
