A lot of the early systems only had line editors, but there are those 
who still
swear by vi as the best programming editor around. I found myself 
swearing at it
more often than not, at least to start with, but it was better than ed 
at least.
It is actually usefull for quick, few line edits, but like any modal 
editor, a
pita for serious work.

Never understood the obsession with teco or emacs either.

Give me a decent gui based editor like nedit, jedit or notepad++ any 
day. The
world stopped using teletypes and decwriters years ago :-)...
