Yes there was and still is a lot of rivalry between the US and British 
forces.   A tale I heard during the Russian occupation of Afgahnistan was 
that a Russian helicopter had been captured and US and British officials 
had a meeting to decide who got to take it apart.  I think the US won 
that round, but right at the end of the meeting the British said "Oh, you 
might find this helpful", dropping a full set of blueprints for the 
helicopter onto the table :-)
