But the damage they do is often not identifiable or quantifiable.  A
System manager causing 2 hours downtime at a critical time will have
cost the company an indentifiable amount of losses (lost sales, or
penalties for not processing payments on time etc).


A manager deciding to go with the flow and move critical systems to
Windows will generally have had the OK from upper management and when
the project fails, they will point fingers at anyone but themselves.

Similarly, when you look at RIM, the new manager decided to delay the
new OS and devices. The priority seems to be cutting costs/staff instead
of saving the company with the promised new OS/devices.

This mistake is not quantifiable. And just like Curly and Palmer, when
he realises he is way above his payscale, instead of admitting defeat
and letting someone else save the company, he will call in M&A bankers
to find a buyer. Oh wait, Heinz at RIM has already done that.
