You paid for some of that work. Check the e-mail addresses in the
change logs. There are a lot of ".gov" and a lot of ".edu"
In some cases corporations like RedHat subsidize the development, with
bug fixes first going to their paying customers before releasing them to
the world.
Other parts were supplied by device manufacturers to support it.
