There were many reasons. Americans finally woke up to the  disaster that
Bush Jr was. And that made it very hard for *any* republican to win. And
Secondly, there was this comedian called Sarah Palin who, while catering
to some extremists, turned off voters in the middle big time.

Also, McCain was held responsible for the choice of Sarah Palin (no
matter who within the republican party pushed for her) so it tarnished
his image. (and his age was also a factor).
