OK. The tab at the top slides out, as if from behind the last tab, to
the right. To turn it off, visit about:config and set
browser.tabs.animate to false. I found this by Googling and I can't
imagine what search terms I used. But when something "this awful"
comes along, and stays in your face, you find a way!
Just stumbled upon it: Google
how to stop animated firefox tabs
I don't recall thinking up "animated".
The other thing I hated was the grayed-out urls. Instead of making the
domain BOLD, they made the rest of the url nearly unreadable by
turning it light gray. I guess that's fine if you're under 40. Anyway,
I just found this:

Yikes! It's our way or the highway! Crap. There are certain things I
*have* to use IE for, like SharePoint, Altiris, and Oracle expense
forms (well, the latter for speed).
OK, to fix the grayed out url,
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2282807
set browser.urlbar.formatting.enabled to false.
Actually, mine was on true! I guess the graying isn't that bad at home
on my Mac. Wow. But the oozing tabs had to go.
Just checked my FF at work over VPN. I have it turned off there. I
guess it's worse there. On the Mac the strokes of the letters are
thicker, thereby making the effect much smaller.
