Ah ha!  I've never noticed that before.  I think my focus
is usually on the main page being displayed and not on the
tab bar, so it's never bothered me.  It also happens very
quickly.  But I might give your fix a try and see if I like
it or not.

Well, I'm *well* over 40 and it doesn't bother me.  OTOH, I use
a not-default theme called Noia 4.  (I doubt most here would like
it, but I've been using it a long time and I *don't* like the
default FF theme at all.)  With this theme and/or the font I use
(Verdana), the URL formatting reads just fine for me (on two
different PCs and a laptop, reasonable resolution LCD displays on
all three).  Although I agree that this is one of those useless
tweaks that should've been left out. Sigh...
