I'm not sure, but I think SMS's point (or one of his points) was that
the OSU server is written in C and C is more efficient with some VMS
file types than with others. The end result might be the same, but the
speeds differ. Most things can be done in Fortran or C, but one
shouldn't ignore that the order of the indices on arrays is reversed.
