There are other operating systems for the X86 platform; e.g. Solaris,
and Linux.

IBM used to offer a Windows substitute, I forget what it was called!
It never became popular.  I don't know if it's still available.

MicroSoft has pretty much won the desktop.  It took them a while
to make it work but they got there.  Windows XP SP-3 is stable as a 
table.  It does what I need.
