Jouk,

Not sure about the answer to question number 1. Regarding your
question number 2, I believe I was able to manually add an ARP entry
for the MP network interface using its MAC address with the MP on my
RX2600 when I first received it. There was a discussion on this
newsgroup at one time on this subject but I cannot seem to find it
right now. Basically you do the following:

1.) Pick any IP address that is known to be available on your network
(for example 192.168.2.100).
2.) Then create the DNS A record entry in your name server for this
address in your local DNS domain file (home.net for example)
3.) Restart your DNS so that it picks up the new A record entry you
just added.
4.) Use arp to add the entry to the machine from which you want to
telnet. For example if your local domain is home.net and you want to
refer to the rx4640 as srvr.home.net then arp -s srvr.home.net xx-xx-
xx-xx-xx-xx (where xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx is the MAC address of the
management card printed on somewhere on the RX4640.
 telnet mp-srvr.home.net

Some people remarked that they did not need to perform the DNS setup
(steps 2 and 3). But, in my case I couldn't get this to work without
adding the DNS entry. However, I don't honestly remember the initial
configuration state of the MP's network configuration when I did this.
So, I am not certain this will work depending on the current
configuration state of the MP. But it cannot hurt to try it. If this
does not work for you then I think you will probably need to use the
external RS-232 connector to reconfigure the MP. The official HP part
number for the MP cable is A6144-63007. However, I have heard that
any standard serial cable should work as long as you do not require
capability beyond communicating with the MP console.

Good luck with your new "toy".

Eric
