   The design and implementation of all modern UNIX kernels derive from 
   and share shortcomings with the original late 60s kernel.  It was
   a well known late 60s concept, in some ways even similar to other
   completely separate kernels such as TOPS-10.

   Even Linux, a completely separate kernel, shares some of the design
   features and shortcomings.  Linus just didn't see a need for
   doing anything about them.
