There are a lot of stories about how PDP-11 autoincrement and
autodecrement addressing modes inspired the ++ and -- operators.

There were also stories about how some instruction on an early IBM
computer inspired Fortran's original three-way calculated IF. But
people who know the computer's instruction set claim there's no such
   instruction.
