I'd call it greed and stupidity!  Honor not involved.

Did they really fail to see that the competition was eating their lunch?
What DEC sold for $3,000, the competition could and did, sell the 
equivalent "Brand X" for $300.  I bought Brand X.  DEC wouldn't service
the Brand X?  I bought nine spares and when a drive died, I replaced it
and dropped the failed drive in the trash.  Those brand X drives didn't 
drives fail very often.

DEC failed to adapt!
