Linux' success isn't due to just a few weeks student work,
but rather to the efforts of a lot more people, doing it
in their leisure time (at least initially).
It also took almost a decade until it was remotely usable.
Another crucial difference to VMS is, that Linux work started when
Unix started to take off in the market.
This gave a lot of motivation to (otherwise unrewarded) developers.
Now what's the incentive to clone an OS as dead as VMS?
