I've seen one company selling various bits that include PCIexpress
to a serial cable and that serial cable to VMEbus (so you could
gum together a PCIexpress to VMEbus adapter), but the name of the
company escapes me.

Recent VMEbus specs include high-speed serial connectors between
the VMEbus connectors. Some folks make SBCs that include a VMEbus
adapter for such cages. Invariably such setups seem to be
PCIexpress out of the CPU support chips to a parallel PCI adapter
to a Universe II VMEbus adapter. Typically, the only thing on
the parallel PCI bus is the VMEbus adapter.
