I've used kvm switches for many years, trying various units,
before finally settling on the Compaq 8 port units. They were made by
Avocent Systems, who are still in the business and are are a very well
built piece of kit, line powered, 1u rack height and typically have
4 or 8 ports. Ps/2 keyboard / mouse and hidensity 15 pin D vga
connectors per port. Part number is EO1004 or EO1008 and there's a
new in box example on fleabay uk right now at 29 ukp, though they
often sell for much less, complete with cables, which are expensive
and you have to factor into the cost. These kvm boxes really are fit
and forget, ime.

Of course, this leaves the problem of what to do with the usb kb / mouse
problem, but again this can be fixed easily by using ps2 to usb adapters,
which are very low cost...
