That question is then followed by how much the buyers will actually pay
to acquire these marquee features, and whether HP or some other
hypothetical newVMS vendor can make enough money from direct and
indirect sources to profit from the development investments.
Then looking beyond the marquee features, are the folks that do decide
look at your newVMS going to find most of the other pieces that they
want and expect of the product, or are the newVMS prices low enough or
are the marquee features unique enough and critical enough to convince
folks to buy newVMS anyway? Most of the customers will also consider
the costs of training folks to use and manage the newVMS system, and of
porting their own software and applications to the platform.
Remember too that you're also competing against what's then available
in two or three years in the future, or whenever you can get your
newVMS marquee features to market. You're definitely not competing
against 2013 and probably not competing against 2014. That's already
happened.
Or will the customer seek to get another five or ten years out of the
existing OpenVMS boxes, or maybe the Linux, Windows Server,
OpenIndiana, AIX, OS X, BSD, z/OS or {whatever} boxes will be good
enough, and we won't have to tangle with that newVMS stuff or port the
existing OpenVMS stuff.
