##
Data Center Server
Twelve fans cool the Data Center server. The fans are all redundant,
hot-swappable, and interchangeable (page 145)
##

So, if they are all redundant, why not remove them all and solve the
noise problem :-)

Later, it explains the cooling is done in 3 zones, each consisting of 4
fans. Only one fan per zone can fail. So only 1 fan in 4 is redundant.

BTW, does having 2 fans in series really make a huge difference in airflow ?

i can understand the fans being different, I can understand the
SMC/firmware that contrtols fan speed being different. But would the
motherboard need to be different at all ?

Out of curiosity, are those enclosures and fan systems similar to what
HP uses for its 8086 servers ? Or does Itanium require significantly
more cooling and thus more powerful fans (and more fans) ?
