Did this correspond to the setting up of callable mail interface ? Or
did the supporting routines exist way before the rewrite ?

I recall seeing unofficial documentation for the callable routines, with
very little info available for foreign mail protocol (especially when it
came to binary /foreign messages.

BTW, until recently, the TCPIP Services symbiont would blindly split
header lines so they would not exceed 256 characters which made the
header lines invalid/ill formed. And the IMAP server would see this and
synthetize a new header from the VMS Maiil information, ditching the
header lines required for the clinet to process attachements. The
message data was seen as a text/ascii single body.

This was fixed in the last TCPIP Services version. Cannot understand why
they decided to split the header lines blindly in the first case. If
you're going to mess with the header, at least split it logically (at
end of a word, start the next line with a few blan characters then
insert rest of header line).
