Impressive endeavour. I doubt I will be writting one for Unix. Why?
It is much more complex than what I originally thought and would take
a good deal of time to design and code. The fact that it doesn't
already exist in Unix pretty much shows the lack of desire for a
program to specifically do it. Much of what it does is already there
in command history and wild card expansion. I frequently use command
history to jump back and forth between directories (although that is
seldom necessary when I can have a windoow open pointed at any and
all directories I may need at a given point in time). And with the
builtin wild card expansion I frequently jump between directories by
typing very short strings. In fact, I tend to create directories for
projects I work on with an eye towards maximizing this feature. I
could probably throw together a "directory history" feature in an hour
or two, but to match TO.COM would take a lot more ans, as I said, in
the Unix world it would not be worth it cause I dubt anyone would use it.
I certainly wouldn't. have to look for some other cool project. I
have been thinking of firing up a VS3100 again and maybe looking at
an updated Emacs for VMS. Who knows.
