It was in 1.0 and I believe 1.1 and 1.2, but at some point it switched
to allowing all bit patterns (binary data).

The base85 encode operation is there if you want to use it.

Also, I found out recently, PS files are supposed to start with %!, and
printers can use that to recognize PS from non-PS. It seems that some HP
printers just check the %. I tried to print a non-PS file starting
with a % and it wouldn't print! Nothing comes out, no error message
or anything!
