Clustering with OpenVMS systems including VAX works as well and as
poorly as it has, with the features and benefits and feature
restrictions and configuration hassles that have been largely unchanged
over the past decade or so.

As for the official support status, all OpenVMS VAX went to "mature"
status at the beginning of 2013, and the few OpenVMS Alpha releases in
PVS are transitioning to lower-level support status. Details are here:
<http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/openvms_supportchart.html>

For some background, vaxima was previously (and might still be
operating) operating a cluster without sharing some of the core files
<http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/169>, and that cluster was also
involving at least one open-source tool that was only available with
Alpha and Itanium versions[1]. That cluster configuration led to some
interesting challenges and odd errors.

[1]The tool was NEWUSER <http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1260>. The
obvious work-around of running the tool on an OpenVMS system other than
OpenVMS VAX was available, given that cluster was multi-architecture.
The very old version of NEWUSER in that cluster also had some known
bugs, and an upgrade was something I'd recommended.
