I would encourage you to familiarise yourself with LDDRIVER. It is very
handy for creating scratch disks on the fly for testing.
More importantly LDDRIVER gave me an alternative backup route when my
DAT drive failed. I created some LM virtual tapes (on an NFS share on a
Mac system where I had more space). This was before I had a DVD writer
so I sized each virtual tape so that it would fit on a CD. With a bit
of care the LM SWITCH command can be used to switch tapes from one
virtual file to another, similar to the way you would change physical
tapes. If you are stuck with only one VMS session you either spawn your
backup command or stick it batch so that your single session is
available for issuing the SWITCH commands.
