SFTP and FTPS are two very different protocols.

SFTP shares three letters with FTP and its basic purpose for file 
transfers, but is otherwise quite different.   SFTP operates over SSH.

FTPS is classic FTP, with SSL/TLS support added.

I use SSH and SFTP with self-signed SSL/TLS certs all the time.  Works

OpenVMS does function with self-signed SSL/TLS certs, and with private 
certificate authorities, too.
