I've always been an advocate of "if ot ain't broke, don't fix it", But...

There are times when you must look beyond that attitude.  Perhaps the "ain't broke" focus is fine for the short term.  It may even provide some level of longevity.  But in the long run, it should only provide the time necesary to find/develope a replacement.

Alpha and OpenVMS will be around for a while.  Perhaps only on the secondary market for hardware, but at least somewhat available.  Utilize that avenue to give you the time to plan and develope a replacement system.  I would think that a well planned effort is far superior to a last minute, slap together system forced into production by necessity.

Even if the "short term" option is to upgrade to an Itanium platform, this too is only a relatively short term solution.  Plan occordingly for a complete replacement as suggested in previous postings using a platform of your choice.
