Debian may not be quite leading edge, but is very stable and has
the advantage that a lot of architectures are supported. I forget
which versions i'm running, but a year or so old on both x86 and
sparc. The x86 is on a laptop that's used primarily for embedded
debug, with openocd driving a j-link jtag adapter. The other install
is on a sparc machine that's used for primarily for network debug, as
it has 4 network ports built in. Both versions seem very stable,
though did have a bit of trouble with gnome on the sparc machine,
but that was sorted.
Suse is on x86 and is very solid indeed and has been my preferred
linux distro for some years. Were it not for the need to run some
windows apps, it would be the main desktop machine...

Chris
