Had a similar problem some year ago. In that case it was an managed
switch but it was configured as "auto" and the Alphaserver was set
hard to FD100. When the switch could not negotiate, it defaulted
back to single duplex. That "worked" until you tried something
like a larger FTP transfer. After setting both ends hard to FD100
all these problems went away.

For a simple switch that is set hard to "auto" I would also
recomend "auto" at both ends.
