I'm not familiar with that switch - but, if auto-sensing means that all ports must autonegotiate then you'll need to either set the VMS server's NIC to also autonegotiate and see if it does the right thing, or, set the VMS server's NIC to 100Half and when the switch port fails it autonegotiation you should end up with a match.
