Are you saying that you are running *8* Alphas in an
environment with *unmanaged* switches? It sounds as
some professional environment and not using managed
switches sound a bit weird.

The FS116 is one of the cheapest home switches available,
aprox $60 each here in Sweden.

I had the same problem with my test system (DS25) in
my office using an similar unmanaged DLink switch and
I simply enabled Auto-negotiation and all was fine.

$ mc latcp set device /autonegotiate EIA0:

or whatever your interface/device is called.
