I'm successfully booting from USB flash drives and loading OpenVMS tailored images into I64 servers from that same USB flash drive.  I have posted a past article to COV on how I'm doing that.  I used the simple expedient of picking a specific mainstream flash drive product SKU and buying multiple pieces to use after confirming a sample worked in the application.


I've also successfully tested using an external USB to SATA enclosure with "SATA drive du jour" deployed internal to the enclosure as a peripheral on an I64 server.  Again the trick is to select and qualify a specific SKU USB to SATA enclosure and stick with it.

Of course, none of the above is officially supported by HP.
