  mav@ (FreeBSD developer for this stuff) is pretty responsive to requests to add chipsets to the driver, as long as the user can provide some basic info (PCI IDs, etc.) and compile/test to make sure the proposed patches work.

That's pretty ancient. 4.x went unsupported over 7 years ago. Back then, the FreeBSD uniprocessor kernel would panic if you booted it on a SMP system. Things are vastly improved since those days.
