Yes, it is, but you have it the wrong way around.

In Europe, the corporations are afraid of the government and the
people instead of the other way around. IOW, the people have a
habit of holding the corporations to account for their actions and
wrongdoings.

In Europe, you are free to make as much money as you like; you just
have to do it with a social conscience and you can't use Dickensian
values as a role model.

In Europe, it's generally realised the best way for a viable, fair,
long term marketplace in which the majority are better off is to
have _real_ competition instead of allowing a single company to
dominate a market segment without having any controls placed on that
company.

Yes, people don't always succeed and yes there are injustices (sadly),
but at least there's an active attempt to make life better for the
majority of people instead of just a few corporations.

OTOH, our bankers and some segments of the police/security services
seem to be only slightly more controlled than your bankers/police
are. :-(
