A long time ago DEC wanted VMS customers to move to Tru64 Unix. That was
one of the best versions of Unix according to many. VMS survived Tru64.
Then Compaq didn't like VMS, HP didn't like and neglected VMS, and
preferred HP-UX of course. Now the Itanium is dead, and HP-UX as well.
Is there any one around who would like to buy HP-UX and port it to x86?
But a year after HP decided it finally wanted to kill off VMS, it was
bought and resurrected. I wonder how many other *nix versions VMS will
survive.
